Question · the job

Dispatcher and logistics specialist are not the same thing

Here “logistics specialist” covers everything to do with transport: the person planning routes at a warehouse and the customs broker alike. A dispatcher in US trucking is a narrow, clear job with one set of tasks.

The real difference

Logistics

A broad word

Can mean responsibility for a warehouse, routes, customs or buying transport. Every company has its own set of tasks, under the same job title.

Dispatcher

One chain of tasks

Find a load for a specific driver, call the broker, agree the price, sign the rate confirmation and run the trip to delivery. Same everywhere.

What a dispatcher does in a day

  1. 01

    Checks where the drivers are

The fleet map on screen: who is driving, who is parked, whose logbook hours are running out.

  2. 02

    Searches the board

DAT and Truckstop. For a specific driver, their area and their trailer type — not “anything that fits”.

  3. 03

    Calls the broker

Gives the MC number, gets the details, negotiates. A load counts as booked not when you agree, but when the rate con is signed.

  4. 04

    Runs the trip

Pickup, paperwork, delivery. If something goes wrong — sorts it out with the broker, not with the driver.

Where the dispatcher sits in the chain

In the US, freight almost never goes straight from the shipper to the carrier: there is a broker in between. The chain looks like this: customer — broker — carrier (the company with the trucks) — driver. The dispatcher works on the carrier’s side and talks to the broker.

An important consequence: a dispatcher doesn’t buy transport, doesn’t clear customs and isn’t responsible for a warehouse. They find money for trucks that already exist, and make sure the trip gets finished.
